One of the huge advantages enjoyed by a chorus in the music-rich New York metropolitan area is the ready availability of outstanding soloists. The Great Neck Choral Society occasionally offers solo opportunities to its most talented members, and a few of these have gone on to become professional singers (some returning later as soloists for our concerts). However, the Society mostly engages professional soloists, and some of these have been stellar names indeed--singers widely known, in some cases internationally, for their work on the concert stage or in opera. Among the best known opera stars in the list below are Barbara Smith Conrad, Elaine Malbin, Maralin Niska and Judith Raskin.

Please note the following:

• The voice categories--especially soprano, mezzo and alto--are suspect. Singers who have a wide range may sing soprano in one work and mezzo-soprano or alto in another. And some singers' vocal range of comfort shifts upward or downward over the years. In this list, singers are generally categorized according to the way they were listed on the printed program the most recent time they performed.
  
  
• If you click on a year you will be directed to the list of past programs and can learn more details about the concert in which a soloist appeared. However, for a multi-work concert, that list does not assign a soloist to a specific work. And for dramatic works, there is no indication of the specific role the soloist filled.
  
  
• A number in parenthesis following the year indicates that the soloist appeared in more than one concert that calendar year.
  
  
• A * following a name indicates that the soloist was a member of the chorus; a # indicates that the soloist was (or is) a former member of the chorus; a & indicates an individual known to be deceased.
  
  
• A "website" link has been included if a soloist has his/her own site or his/her own page as part of a broader site. Caution: These links are likely to become outdated. If no link is given, it is still possible in many, though not all, cases to learn more about a soloist by "googling" the name on the Internet.
